Summary

    • Measured Ave Diameter: 0.343mm (149.13% of claimed diameter)
    • Out of Roundness: 0.051mm (14.86% variation in diameter)
    • Measured Maximum Break: 52.64 lbs (175.47% of claimed 30 lbs)
    • Measured Stretch @ Break: 2.64%
    • Abrasion Maximum Break: 17.44 lbs (33.13% of max break)
    • FG Knot Maximum Break: 41.18 lbs (78.23% of max break)

The updated version of Shimanos’ Kairiki 8 appears to be a nice line. Apart from some unknown deposits we saw under the microscope, the construction looked excellent. Both the quoted diameter and maximum break values were understated according to our tests. This seems like a significant improvement compared to the other 2 original Kairiki lines we tested in 8 and 15lb, ranking 121st and 75th respectively.

Shimano specify 2 maximum break values on the box, one for “World Spec” which is 30lbs and another “EU Spec” which is 22.5kg or 49.5lbs. So if we do the maths against that maximum break value we get 106.34% of the claimed maximum break, which is much closer than the 30lb otherwise printed on the box.
